Janowiec Castle and it's history

The town and castle of Janowiec are situated in the west of the Lublin Voivodeship, on the steep west bank of the midway ravine of the river Vistula. At Janowiec the river forces its way through the belt of mid-Polish uplands and forms a narrow ravine. The beauty of the countryside and the close neighbourhood of Kazimierz Dolny, a small town situated on the opposite bank and famous for its Rennaisance town houses and granaries, make Janowiec a real tourist attraction.

The castle, a bastia, was built in the sixteenth century and continued to be developed until the end of the eighteenth century. Conservation and adaptation work, aimed at restoration of part of the interiors to their original splendour, has now been under way for more than twenty-five years. The North House of the castle houses a regular exhibition devoted to the history of the castle and plans for its future. The Nadwiślańskie Museum takes care of the site.
